Refund Policy
This Refund Policy explains how Scriptoria Lab handles refund requests for screenplay development, writing, structuring, rewriting, dialogue development, story consulting, digital-content scripting, advertising script services, and related creative deliverables. Because our services are custom, labor-based, and intellectual in nature, refund treatment differs from the refund treatment applicable to standard retail goods.
By purchasing or commissioning services from Scriptoria Lab, the Client acknowledges that professional time, creative development effort, research, story analysis, ideation, drafting, structural planning, editorial effort, and revision work begin to generate value as soon as project work starts, even if the project is later paused, abandoned, changed, or not commercially used.
Nature of Services
Scriptoria Lab does not sell mass-produced products. We provide custom creative services tailored to a specific Client brief, concept, production intention, audience, and narrative objective. Once a project is accepted, the Company allocates creative time, scheduling capacity, development attention, and workflow resources specifically to that Client.
As a result, refund rights are inherently limited. Even where a finished screenplay has not yet been delivered, substantial billable value may already have been created through concept exploration, narrative architecture, structural mapping, script formatting setup, character logic development, tonal calibration, and other project-specific labor.
General Rule
Except as expressly stated in this Policy or otherwise required by applicable law, payments made to Scriptoria Lab are non-refundable once work has started. Work is considered started when the Company begins research, outlines the project, reviews materials, develops structure, drafts scenes, writes dialogue, prepares story documentation, performs rewrite work, or otherwise dedicates project-specific effort to the Client’s engagement.
The Client’s change of mind, internal management change, brand pivot, production delay, investor issue, preference shift, dissatisfaction based solely on subjective taste, or later decision not to use the materials does not automatically create a right to a refund.
Deposit Policy
Deposits reserve production capacity, creative scheduling, and project allocation. For that reason, deposits are generally non-refundable. A deposit is not merely a placeholder payment; it compensates the Company for reserving time, declining competing work where applicable, initiating development planning, and preparing to perform the engagement.
If the Client delays kickoff after the deposit has been paid, Scriptoria Lab may still treat the deposit as earned in whole or in part depending on the extent of preparatory work, calendar reservation, and communication already undertaken. The Company may, at its sole discretion, apply a deposit to a rescheduled project where commercially reasonable, but is not required to do so.
Refund Eligibility
A refund may be considered only in limited circumstances, such as where the Client paid for a project and the Company has not started work of any kind, has not reserved meaningful project time, and has not supplied any draft, outline, concept work, notes, structural direction, or partial deliverable. Even in such cases, Scriptoria Lab may deduct payment-processing fees, administrative fees, currency conversion losses, or other direct transaction costs.
Refund eligibility is assessed case by case using factors that may include the project stage, amount of work already performed, time reserved, documents reviewed, communications exchanged, and whether the Company has already begun substantive ideation or writing.
A project does not need to reach "final draft" status for work to be considered started. Brainstorming, outlining, development, narrative planning, script preparation, and structural analysis are all compensable stages of professional creative labor.
Non-Refundable Cases
- Any portion of the writing, development, or revision process has begun
- A treatment, outline, partial draft, full draft, notes document, or structural material has been delivered
- The Client changes creative direction after work has started
- The Client fails to reply, delays approvals, or abandons the project midstream
- The Client chooses not to use, film, publish, pitch, produce, or otherwise exploit the delivered material
- The Client requests cancellation after scheduling capacity has already been reserved for the project
- Dissatisfaction arises from subjective creative preference after included revisions or revision opportunities have been provided
Refunds are likewise not available merely because a project does not achieve a desired business outcome, production outcome, or market response. Scriptoria Lab is engaged to provide professional screenplay and script-development services, not guaranteed commercial results.
Partial Refunds
In limited cases, Scriptoria Lab may choose to issue a partial refund at its sole discretion. Partial refunds, where offered, are typically calculated by reference to work not yet performed rather than work already completed. This means that any time spent on project setup, development, review, concept creation, writing, editing, or revision may be deducted before a partial refund amount is considered.
The Company is under no obligation to grant a partial refund where the Client unilaterally changes scope, pauses indefinitely, causes project drift through repeated redirection, or requests termination after substantial creative work has already been invested.
Chargebacks & Disputes
The Client agrees to contact Scriptoria Lab first before initiating a payment dispute, reversal, or chargeback. Filing a chargeback after receiving drafts, notes, structural work, or other creative value may constitute a breach of these policies and may be contested using the project record, communications, timestamps, deliverables, and proof of work performed.
Where a chargeback is initiated in bad faith after services have been delivered or substantially performed, Scriptoria Lab reserves all rights to suspend rights transfer, cease further services, refuse future work, pursue recovery of unpaid fees, and rely on all available contractual and legal remedies.
